Educational Track and
Award Requirements

Communication Track

The communication track award progression features the Competent Communicator (CC), Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB), Advanced Communicator Silver (ACS), and Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG).

Leadership Track

The leadership track award progression includes Competent Leader (CL), Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) and the Advanced Leader Silver (ALS). The Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) remains the highest award.

Award Requirements

Competent Communicator (CC): Completed the Competent Communication Manual (10 speeches).

Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB):

  • Achieved the Competent Communicator (CC) or Competent Toastmaster (CTM) Award*
  • Completed two advanced communication manuals

Advanced Communicator Silver (ACS):

  • Achieved the Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB) award, the Advanced Toastmster Bronze Award or the Able Toastmaster Award*
  • Completed two additional advanced communication manuals (may not be those completed for any previous award)
  • Conducted any two programs from the Better Speaker Series and/or The Successful Club Series (may not be those completed for any previous award)

Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG):

  • Achieved the Advanced Communicator Silver (ACS) Award, the Advanced Toastmaster Silver Award or the Able Toastmaster Award*
  • Completed two additional advanced communication manuals (may not be those completed for any previous award)
  • Conducted a Success/Leadership Program or Success/Communication Program or a Youth Leadership Program (may not be one completed for any previous award)
  • Coached a new member with the first three speech projects

Competent Leader (CL): Completion of Competent Leader manual

Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB):

  • Achieved Competent Leader Award
  • Achieved Competent Communicator Award or Competent Toastmaster Award
  • Served at least six months as a Club officer (President, Vice President of Education, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer or Sergeant-at-Arms) and while an officer participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan
  • While a Club officer, participated in a District-sponsored Club officers training program
  • Conducted any two programs from the Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series (may not be those completed for any previous award)

Advanced Leader Silver (ALS):

  • Achieved the Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) Award or the "old" Competent Leader Award*
  • Served a complete term as a District Officer (District Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Public Relations Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, Division Governor or Area Governor)
  • Completed the High Performance Leadership Program
  • Served successfully as a Club Sponsor, Mentor or Specialist

Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)::

  • Achieved the Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG) Award or Advanced Toastmaster Gold Award*
  • Achieved the Advanced Leadership Silver Award (ALS) or Advanced Leader Award*

*In January 2006 the TI Educational Recognition System began transitioning to new award titles and other improvements in the the educational award designations. There is a two year "grace period" for those working toward the Competent Leader and Advanced Leader awards due to the change in requirements. Beginning July 1, 2008, all members must meet the new requirements. The new Competent Communicator manual (debut January 2006) along with the Competent Leadership manual is included in the revised New Member Kit. Toastmasters International began issuing the new Competent Leader award in July 2006.
